How Does Renuva Work?

So how does Renuva work? Simply put, when Renuva is injected into the soft tissue, it gets replaced by your body’s own fat or adipose tissue. That is why some doctors will refer to Renuva as an adipose matrix, or scaffold – because it is essentially a supporting framework system that helps promote the repopulation of fat cells wherever it is injected.

Biologically, Renuva is an allograft tissue complex. The microscopic framework is comprised of the same protein components and growth factors – such as FGF-2, VEGF, and collagen subtypes – that are found in your body’s own adipose tissue. So after treatment with Renuva, your body will help bring in more blood flow around the matrix and stimulate remodeling with new fat cells. This is shown here in the adjacent diagram.

Think of Renuva as being like an off-the-shelf version of fat transfer. Renuva is injected into the soft tissue much like any other dermal filler. Thereafter, Renuva stimulates your body to bring in more blood flow and regenerate new fat cells. This occurs on the order of 6-12 weeks after treatment. Clinically, this process results in added volume wherever the Renuva was placed.

Think of Renuva as giving the same effect as fat transfer – just without having to have fat transfer surgery!

Renuva Treatment Areas

Renuva is most commonly used in facial rejuvenation to provide cosmetic volume enhancement in the following areas:

• Cheeks
• Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
• Jawline and jowls
• Chin
• Neck

It is also frequently used in other areas of the body, such as the breast, abdomen, hips, and thighs to correct irregular divots and depressions. For instance, many patients will develop depressed scars after body liposuction, which can contribute to abnormal shadowing. Renuva can be used to correct these irregular contours by plumping out the soft tissue to restore a smoother overall contour.

Renuva Treatment

Renuva treatment is done just like any other filler injection. The procedure is done in the medical spa setting and takes 15-30 minutes depending on the area being treated. Much like injectable fillers, there is really no downtime and most patients can return to routine daily activities that same day.

Over the course of the first few months after Renuva injection, the matrix will begin to disappear. As this occurs, your body will begin replacing the matrix with its own fat cells. It is thought that fat cells naturally have a lifespan of approximately 5-10 years. So it is postulated that Renuva will last in a similar manner.
